Historical migration
When creating colonies in early Brazil the Portuguese did not allow people to migrate from other places to Rio to avoid losing territory to other powerful European nations. In the early 19th century, France conquered Portugal causing many high-ranking Portuguese officials to flee to Rio. This mass migration of Portuguese caused a boom in the economic development of the city. his pertains to Rio de Janiero because the French tried to settle at the site of the city but were unsuccessful due to the fact that they could not bring enough people. This influenced the culture of the city. To avoid persecution by Union officials, many confederates left the United States for Brazil. When they cames to Brazil, they entered through Rio de Janeiro. This added to the mixed cultures of the city by adding an American facet to it. When Brazil gained its independence from the Portuguese, many people came to the city looking for freedom from religious persecution. This caused many people from European nations to come to the city and again add to the economic boom of the development.
